Girl with a pearl earing - Johannes Vermeer
Girl with a Pearl Earring (1665) - Vermeer

Life is like a waking dream,

Ripples on a fading stream,

It has laughter, it has crying—

A beginning and an ending.

It's dear like a quiet dove,

Longing for his mate's true love.

He knows well that it could shatter,

Still he risks all for the matter.

David Gosselin is a poet, translator, and linguist based in Montreal. He is the founder of The Chained Muse poetry website and the founder of the New Lyre Podcast. His first collection of poems is entitled Modern Dreams.
