The Chained Muse is an online poetry journal dedicated to promoting 21st century classical poetry.
We believe classical poetry is not a question of epoch or time, but rather a question of our fundamental nature. In the words of Friedrich Schiller, the great German poet, regarding the role of art and poetry:
The dignity of Man into your hands is given,
Its keeper be!
It sinks with you! With you it will be risen!
At The Chained Muse we believe the question of art is the strategic battle ground for all ideas, which is known to both the enemies and defenders of humanity. According to Schiller, it's through that door, through Beautiful art, that one can rise to address the most pressing issues of politics and the state. Schiller considered this the greatest of all works of art.
Today the question is generally lost not only in poetry, but in most fields. Now more than ever, reviving classical composition is not just a question of art, but rather something which coincides with the goal of rediscovering Humanity's lost nature.
The Chained Muse strives to contribute something towards that goal, reviving these crucial issues of poetic composition through the original contributions of poets and writers who share this same vision. We invite all those who are interested to submit their original contributions.
In the words of John F. Kennedy:
When power leads men towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the areas of man’s concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of his existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses. For art establishes the basic human truth which must serve as the touchstone of our judgment.
